What am I talking about? Well Velma and Shaggy are awkward looking so by comparison Fred and Daphne are even more attractive. In Jabberjaw Bubbles and Clamhead make Biff and Shelly look better just by being so unattractive. Rinse and repeat through time.
Its the Ugly Friends Syndrome. Surround yourself with unattractive people and you will look more attractive by comparison when people see you in a group.
It's bullshit. And I think that, especially in The Pebbles and Bamm Bamm Show, the Ugly Friends deserve better.
So I made them hot.
Moonrock Crater is the "Smart Guy" who invents stuff that could potentially get the gang out of trouble, but usually makes for comedic mishaps when something goes wrong (normally via a badluck character named Schleprock). What he really is is something similar to an animal trainer since most of his inventions are...dinosaurs and mammals. You know how it is with the Flintstones world (Eh, it's a livin'). Of course, he was designed to be thin and dorky looking to make Bamm Bamm look more manly (Bamm Bamm is buff but passive. So a character like Moonrock makes him more masculine).
Anywho, he uses like...a friggen bone for a button. That's pretty darn chic in Stone Age terms. He needs to be hot.
Wiggy Rockstone was supposed to be one of the people who made Pebbles' curves look curvier. However, I loved Wiggy because she was an odd kind of Flintstones character. She was always spouting off about horoscopes and astrology in an age where...everyone should have been an atheist or pagan and yet...for someone reason celebrating X-mas...before Jesus was even born O.o
Also, while she should have been an Ugly Friend I noticed that while I was looking for references I saw this one frame cel where she had this alluring look on her face and I was like..."This girl really does have a sensual side..." so I set about to bring it out.
Penny Pillar was the "Ugly Friend" because she was short and a big-boned girl. Perfect contrast to Pebbles' supermodel proportions. But...but...BUT Penny is like the sweetest character in the show! I mean she wasn't your usual Hanna Barbera "Good Girl" who was conniving behind people's backs or cunning for all the wrong reasons. She was a live and let live kind of gal who revealed herself to be very down to Earth.
So I wanted to make her look good, cause big people can be beautiful as well and in fact are a great deal of the time. I'm not talking obesity but people who really are just naturally big and take care of themselves. They grow into a certain kind of plump beauty or handsomeness that's great.
Fat people...don't have to be an "Ugly Friend"
